Safeguarding

The College is committed to safeguarding, promoting the health and welfare of our young people and vulnerable adults.  We expect all staff to share in this commitment by fostering an honest, open, caring, and supportive climate. The student’s welfare is of paramount importance. It is our policy to listen to our young people, to not place any value judgement on their concerns that may prevent us from fully listening to what our young people are saying. We take our student’s health and welfare seriously and act with urgency to prevent harm and to keep them safe. There is a ‘whole college approach to safeguarding’ where safeguarding and child protection underpins all our relevant polices and processes. We operate with the best interests of the young people at heart. Our safeguarding team are on hand for students, parents/carers and members of staff.

The Prevent Duty

The College fully recognises its legal obligations to have “due regard to the need to prevent people from being drawn into terrorism” (Section 26 of the Counter-Terrorism and Security Act 2015). In particular, this means that the College pays careful attention to the ways in which it can safeguard young people and help to prevent them from being radicalised. Prevent factsheet

In meeting the requirements of the Prevent Duty Guidance March 2023, the College undertakes a range of actions, including:

  • Working in partnership with others to address concerns
  • Undertaking a risk assessment of any ways in which students or staff may be at risk of being drawn into terrorism and creating an action plan to address any such risks
  • Providing training for staff on how they can contribute positively to the Prevent Duty
  • Providing strong pastoral care and support for students to enhance their welfare
  • Implementing clear policies for the use of I.T. which support the goals of the Prevent Duty.

The College further recognises the importance of promoting positive values throughout all of its functions. These values (referred to as British Values) are defined as:

“democracy, the rule of law, individual liberty and mutual respect and tolerance for those with different faiths and beliefs”. Prevent Duty Guidance March 2023
