Young Carers

Young Carers

We understand that some students provide significant caring tasks for a relative who are unwell, disabled, have a mental health condition or an addiction. Your caring commitments can take a considerable amount of time and effort which can impact on your college life. At Bilborough College we have Young Carers Leads who can help you balance your studies and caring commitments. They can advise you of support available at college and external agencies to enable you to make the most of your time at college.

Financial Support

As a young carer you may be eligible to the 16 – 19 Further Education Bursary. This will depend on your household income. The bursary can assist students by contributing to the essential expenses incurred when attending college, such as costs towards a bus pass, course materials, essential trips related to their studies, costs towards attending university open days and for some student’s college meals. Bursaries will usually be paid ‘in kind’ rather than monetary payments.

Emotional Support

As a young carer you may want to access emotional support. At Bilborough College we offer a counselling and a wellbeing service, but also have links to external agencies.
