Q: Why should I do this course rather than A Level Media Studies?
This is a far more practical course so it depends on the sort of work you prefer. If you like planning and producing different media texts, working in groups and constant assessment then this is probably the right course for you. If you prefer analysing and writing about media texts and some practical work then consider A Level Media Studies. If you are really interested in films you can take the BTEC course with A Level Film Studies.
Q: What about university?
BTEC courses give you the same UCAS points as A Levels. This course will give you the equivalent UCAS points that you would get for an A Level course. It is a viable option for any pathway, including University, Apprenticeships or going directly in to the media industry.
Q: Will this course get me a job in the media?
The BTEC is a route into industry or further education. Although it doesn’t guarantee you a job in the media, this course will help you develop some of the skills you’ll need to get one. There is a skills shortage in all media industries and there are always opportunities for creative and talented people.
Q: Do I need to have studied media production before?
No, but many of our students already make their own work: videos, blogs, review etc. You don’t have to but you do have to be interested in production work.
Q: Do I need to buy a camera for the practical work?
No, we provide all the equipment you need for your coursework.
Q: Are there any costs?
There is a small insurance charge which allows you to take cameras out of college.
Q: Are there any exams?
Yes, there is one assessment that we do in the first year, this is done on a computer. There is also a practical assessment that takes place under supervised conditions in the second year. Coursework is a large part of the course however and it is a good course for people who enjoy practical work and continuous assessment.
