Q: What resources will I need to buy?
You will need to buy a large folder, folder dividers, note pad and stationary and ensure these are with you in all lessons. We ask all of our students to produce handwritten notes in sessions, so these are accessible to you for revision purposes. With regards to the dividers, we ask out students to have a divider for each of the 5 units, so you are able to place your notes and lesson resources inside your folder in an organised manner. Any other resources needed for the course, we will supply for your studies.
Q: What is the difference between IT and Computer Science?
At a glance, IT focuses on the practical side of information technologies, such as learning about the uses of hardware, software, networks, databases and operating systems to name a few. This course does NOT have any programming in it. You can choose to complete both computer Science and CTEC IT if you wish. However, remember this does narrow down your options for the future.
Q: What grades do I need to enrol on the CTEC IT course?
So long as you meet the college entry requirements, achieving a minimum of 5 GCSE grades point 4 or higher, which includes English, Maths and Science, then you will be able to enrol on the CTEC IT course. You do not need to have a GCSE qualification in ICT. Having a GCSE IT qualification maybe helpful, but it is not an essential entry requirement.
Q: How many people will be in my class?
Our IT room can only accommodate 22 students at any one time. As there tends to be more than 22 students who enrol onto the CTEC course, our class numbers tend to have around 15+ students, split across two or more groups. This ensures that everyone has access to a computer and room to spread out to work in pairs or small group activities. (This may change due to the current Covid19 pandemic)
Q: How many lessons a week do I have in CTEC IT?
As with all of your subjects, you get 3 lessons per week. Each lesson is 1.5 hours long. You are also expected to undertake a minimum of 4 hours independent study outside of these lessons (through a range of homework activities) per A-Level subject. (This may change due to the current Covid19 pandemic)
Q: What is CTEC IT?
CTEC IT – is a L3 qualification which is the equivalent of an A level. It can be studied alongside 2 other A levels/BTECs. We accept any student who has met the entry requirements of the college, even if you didn’t study IT at GCSE. It is a great option for anyone who is interested in learning about new technologies, Cyber Security threats and incidents and wants to have a go at developing models for a new system. You will study 5 units over the course of the two years. Three of these units are externally assessed exams and the last two units, are coursework. CTEC IT follows the OCR Cambridge Technicals Level 3 in IT and more information about the following units can be found on: https://www.ocr.org.uk/qualifications/cambridge-technicals/information-technology/#level-3
- Unit 1: Fundamentals of IT
- Unit 2: Global Information
- Unit 3: Cyber Security
- Unit 7: Data Analysis and Design
- Unit 13: Social Media and Digital Marketing
