BTEC Extended Diploma in Applied Science FAQs

Equivalent to 3 A-Levels this course will suit you if you are prepared to develop good practical skills by getting involved in lessons. You also need to be organised and able to listen carefully to advice. Most importantly, you should have a genuine interest in science as it is going to fill your whole timetable.

Entry Requirements:

5 GCSEs at grade 4 or above, including Maths, English. At least 5-4 in Double Science or 5-4-4 in Triple Science.

Educational Visits

The BTEC Extended Diploma Applied Science students have taken part in the following visits to complement their units: The Space Centre, Nottingham University Eco Homes Project and a local pharmaceutical company, Juniper.

Course Structure

The full qualification is 13 units. These will be spread over 2 years.

The units are assessed either by formal exams, externally set and marked practical assessments or by completion of a coursework portfolio. Just over 40% is assessed externally.

Year 1:

Unit 1: Principles and Applications of Science. External exam on cells and tissues, periodic table and waves.
Unit 2: Practical Scientific Procedures and Techniques. Internally set assignments including experiments from biology, chemistry and physics.
Unit 3: Scientific Investigation skills. Externally set and marked investigation on biology and physics topics.
Unit 4: Laboratory Techniques and their Application. Internally set assignment.
Plus 2 more internally set and marked units based on more traditional science topics, one physics and one biology.

Year 2:

Contains 3 more compulsory units that are assessed in a similar way to units 1 to 3, plus 4 more traditional science units, 2 chemistry and 1 each for biology and physics.
